All of the songs featured on this album are classic Minnie, with the exception of one, "Minnie's Lament". Even back in '75 I found this tune to be incredibly sad and totally out of character for Minnie. Don't misunderstand, "Rainy Day In Centerville" and "Brewster Bay" (featured on this album) are sweetly sad tunes which Minnie does very well, but "Minnie's Lament" borders on the deep deep sadness expressed by "Sundown Lady's Artist of the Month". By all accounts that's pretty darn sad, but I digress. Minnie sings this song beautifully, but it just seems so out of place. I'm sure there are those who would speculate that "Minnie's Lament" had something to do with the fact Minnie was diagnosed with breast cancer during the recording of this album. Although, this would be the logical thought pattern to follow, the song was written in 1971... so who knows? |
